History
The Department of Biology was founded in 1924 by Acad. Metodiy Popov, who headed it until 1953.
After him, Heads of the Department were: Acad. Radoy Popivanov (from 1953 to 1977), Prof. Botyu Botev (from 1977 to 1982), Prof. Lyudmil Nakov (from 1982 to 1998), Prof. Iliya Vatef (from 1998 to 2012) and Assoc. Prof. Dimitrina Dimitrova-Dikanarova (2012 – present).
Teaching and research
Teaching
The Department of Biology is teaching 1 year students of medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy. The biology curriculum includes three main parts: General biology, Parasitology and Comparative anatomy of vertebrates.
Research
The main research field at the Department of Biology is reproductive biology (Prof. Stefka Delimitreva). Traditionally, research is also done on sperm antibodies and their role for infertility (Prof. Dimitrova-Dikanarova), lectins and immunobiology of ocular lens and alpha B crystalline.
